How do you get an involuntarily hospitalization of your record?

Several years ago, i was involuntarily hospitalized for depression and i was wondering how do you expunge that from my record in order to make a gun purchase? I am longer the way i was and i wanted to make the purchase of a shotgun, for home defense. I live in Virginia now, for reference.
